DARS Report Adjustments
The major, minor, and degree requirements have been thoroughly tested for each catalog year. However, there may be an occasion in which the DARS report for an individual student may need to be adjusted. If this occurs, review the list of common discrepancies below. If you have further inquiries please fill out the DARS inquiry form.
DARS reports could be incomplete for the following reasons:
- Transfer courses not articulated as a NIU course equivalent may not have the appropriate descriptors attached; contact Williston 220 or fill out a DARS inquiry form.
- Substitutions, waivers, or other exceptions were not recorded; contact Williston 220.
- Foreign language comments, CLEP, and advanced placement were not recorded accurately; contact Williston 220.
- Compact benefit code and/or reentering students with GPA beginning again were not entered accurately; contact Williston 220.
- Math course with zero hours but earned a "C" or better not being utilized in a requirement. If this is a restriction, contact the Department of Mathematics for a possible reversal of credit.
- Credit for restricted course based on a specific major; contact your major adviser.
- Catalog indicated on report is not catalog choice of student. DARS defaults catalog to the year the student entered NIU unless we have student's written declaration of catalog choice change. Student may change catalog choice in Williston 220.
- Course number/department title changes prior to 1970 have not been encoded into DARS. Any reentering student whose initial enrollment was prior to 1970 could be affected; contact your adviser.
- Topic courses may not be properly applied to the major; contact your adviser.
- Completion of a Bachelor of Arts foreign language sequence based on four years of one language in high school with no grade lower than a "C". Students must send a high school transcript to be evaluated. If a student believes their transcript was received and the report still indicates this requirement is OK, thestudent should contact Williston 220.
- General education categories show an IP status but you have already completed that area. Any time a course is in progress that is a choice in that area, the DARS report will used the most recently taken or enrolled courses. If you decide not to complete that course, the report will return to the OK status.
Always contact your major/minor adviser when a course is not counting toward your major/minor as you expected. Your adviser should contact our office to resolve this situation as it may affect all students in your situation.
Questions regarding general education should be addressed to an adviser in your college office.
